How to use the Minecraft skin editor

Import a skin, paint the details, and export your character for the game. On desktop, use the editor panels; on mobile, open the matching panel from the editor tabs.

01

Import a skin and navigate

Use Import skin to open a PNG or My skins to load a generated character. Start with a sample if you have no file. Select Move, drag the model to rotate it, and use the mouse wheel to zoom.

Inspect the front, back, sides, and top. Reset the view if the character moves out of sight, or enter fullscreen for more drawing space.

02

Brush, eraser, fill, and shade

Choose a color, then click or drag with Brush to paint pixels on the model. Eraser removes pixels from the selected editing layer. Fill colors an area according to its tool settings; Shade changes existing colors. Open the tool panel to adjust available size, shape, and other options.

Use the eyedropper to sample colors. Mirror is useful for symmetrical outfits; turn it off for asymmetric details. Undo with the button or Ctrl/Cmd+Z, and use Redo to restore an undone action.

03

Manage editing layers

Select a layer in the layer list before painting. Add blank layers to separate clothing, hair, and accessories. Drag layers to change their stacking order and toggle visibility to compare changes.

A hidden selected layer cannot be painted: show it or select another layer. Merge combines the current layer with the one below; Delete removes a layer. Download a project backup before major changes.

04

Base surface and outer overlay

The base surface sits directly on the body. The overlay sits slightly above it for hats, sleeves, and outer clothing. Toggle their visibility in the model controls to reach the intended surface.

Base and overlay surfaces are different from editing layers: each editing layer can contain texture for both surfaces. Hide the overlay before painting the base, then select your editing layer.

05

Body parts and hidden areas

Toggle the head, torso, arms, and legs in Parts. To reach the underarms, inner legs, or neck, hide the obstructing part and rotate the model to a useful angle.

Hiding a part changes the editing view without erasing its texture. Show all parts again when finished and inspect the seams and colors across adjoining faces.

06

Choose Classic or Slim

Model offers Classic arms, four pixels wide, and Slim arms, three pixels wide. AI-generated skins on this site use Classic, so keep that model when editing them.

Inspect arm and sleeve textures after changing models. Select the same model when importing into Minecraft to avoid mismatched arm textures. Switching models does not redesign your outfit.

07

Pixel grids and rendering

Enable the base grid or overlay grid in Grid to locate eyes, clothing edges, and small patterns. Zoom in and paint one cell at a time to align details.

Grids are viewing aids and do not appear in the exported PNG. Backface and grid culling under Render control surfaces and lines facing away from the camera. Turn grids off to check the finished appearance.

08

Palettes and layer filters

Choose colors from palettes and reuse recent colors. Select a layer and adjust its brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, or opacity in the layer panel to change its appearance.

Filters affect the selected layer, including how newly painted colors appear. Put separate outfit elements on different layers to adjust their colors independently.

09

Save a project and export a skin

Download PNG exports the skin texture for the game. Download project saves an NCRS file with editing layers for later changes. Reopen it using Import project in the embedded editor’s Import panel.

Drafts are stored in the current browser separately for each skin. Clearing browser data or changing devices can make them unavailable. Download project backups for important work; edits do not replace the original AI result in your account.
